History

Our decade of existence has given us experience from which we have learnt a lot and still continue to learn. With transparency being one of our core values, we find it very important for our stakeholders to know our past, present and future, and walk every step with us. Here is an account of some of the events that shaped our operations.

01.

Bactokit, a miniaturized kit for diagnosing bacterial infections, was our first research project. From June 2012 to December 2014, several moves were made to bring this idea to reality, however, the mission got prematurely aborted due to lack of funds. In 2015, the project got a ray of hope when Enterprise Uganda, Nile Breweries Limited and NTV Uganda organized “Kickstart” to promote youth entrepreneurship; MIJUMBI was shortlisted among the top 50 entrepreneurs but this idea did not qualify for the next round of 25. NTV Uganda beautifully captured this moment and to specifically watch MIJUMBI’s fate, checkout segment two at 3:20-4:35.

02.

A certain part in the development process of bactokit required a component of HIV-positive whole blood. Thus, to advance this work, MIJUMBI made a formal request to Uganda Blood Transfusion Services through a letter dated and delivered on 23rd October 2017. Till this day, no feedback has been given to the request. However, a miraculous meeting with an “angel” became a turning-point, the sample was availed and soon the research focus shifted from Bactokit to HIV cure, which went silky-smooth, and morale-boosted the development of Hepatitis B and Cancer cures.

03.

In 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world and Uganda was in a lockdown, MIJUMBI used his experience gained from work on HIV and Hepatitis B, to quickly develop a cure that would abate the pandemic. Following successful laboratory procedures, he notified the ministry of health in a letter dated 10th April 2020, where he asked that his product be tried out. However, his good intention was given a rough reception.

04.

Among those who responded to his letter, Prof. Joloba, dean of Biomedical Sciences at Makerere University (this University, though the best in Uganda, ranks in the category 801-1000 of global top universities list and 601-800 of impact list) suggested pressing criminal charges against MIJUMBI and offering medical treatment to him.

05.

Opio Samuel, the then Secretary, Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda, responded through a letter dated 11th April 2020. Whereas he raised genuine points of concern and seemed to have good intentions, he clearly never understood the purpose of the letter and had no room for creativity.

06.

One of Prof. Joloba’s prayers came to pass, the National Drug Authority pressed criminal charges against MIJUMBI and had him behind bars for three and half days (84 hours) after which he was unconditionally released from police detention following a presidential directive.

While still under police detention, MIJUMBI was bold enough to tell the world that if given opportunity he would ably verify his cure claims. NTV Uganda, a brand of nation media group, beautifully recorded this in their legendary style and shared it with the world. Watch video on YouTube.

Despite release from police detention, the National Drug Authority held MIJUMBI’s equipment and reagents for six months.

07.

A few weeks after MIJUMBI being released from police detention, Dr. Peter Ndemere, the then Executive Secretary of Uganda National Council for Science and Technology, reached out through a letter dated 27th April 2020, delivered via e-mail.

The latter asked MIJUMBI to submit his research protocol and a sample of the product. Also, the institution arranged a meeting with MIJUMBI, however, MIJUMBI did not respond to the invitation following advice from the medical department of state house.

08.

In 2021 when Covid-19 hit Uganda, MIJUMBI formally sought permission from Uganda National Council for Science and Technology to resume scientific investigations using his then laboratory infrastructure because one of the charges pressed against him by the National Drug Authority, as told by a police officer at Jinja road police station, was operating an unregistered laboratory.

This letter was dated 29th June 2021 and delivered the same day.

09.
MIJUMBI waited for feedback from Uganda National Council for Science and Technology but it came in vain. He then appealed to His Excellency Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, the president of the republic of Uganda, for permission to use his laboratory infrastructure. This letter was dated 14th July 2021 and delivered the same day.
10.

MIJUMBI then wrote to the executive secretary of National Drug Authority informing the latter of ongoing work. This letter was dated 22nd July 2021 and delivered on the same day.

11.

On 29th July 2021 MIJUMBI formally informed the National Drug Authority of his intention to conduct animal trial of the covid-19 cure candidate.

12.
Finally, Uganda National Council for Science and Technology responded to MIJUMBI’s letter to them. In a letter dated 9th August 2021, delivered via e-mail, Dr. Ongol Martin, the then acting executive secretary, made clear the role of the entity, which meant the charge of operating unregistered laboratory was unlawful.
13.

On 13th August 2021 MIJUMBI reached out to National Drug Authority for permission to conduct phase 1 clinical trial of the covid-19 cure candidate.

14.
National Drug Authority through a letter dated 20th August 2021 invited MIJUMBI to a pre-submission meeting scheduled for 23rd August 2021. This letter spelled out the requirements for approval to conduct clinical trials.
15.
On 23rd August 2021 MIJUMBI delivered results of his covid-19 cure candidate laboratory animal studies to National Drug Authority and met with them as scheduled. The conditions for approval to conduct clinical trials require massive financial investment, which is what is being worked on at the moment.
